DescriptionLymphatic filariasis is also known as elephantiasis. It is a disease of the tropics characterized by grotesque swelling of the limbs and male genitalia. The disease is caused by thread-like, parasitic filarial worms, Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori. These worms lodge in the lymphatic system. They live for 4-6 years, producing millions of tiny larvae (microfilariae) that circulate in the blood.
